Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice Parnership

“Buccaneers” at the Children’s Theater on September 26 at 1p.m. followed by a panel discussion on forgiveness.  Join stakeholders in restorative practices, faith groups, youth workers, and the broader public for an afternoon of theater and conversation. Enjoy a discounted matinee production of Buccaneers, panel discussion with experts in the field and members of the Buccaneers artistic team and a networking reception. Seward Winter Frolic: Art in the ‘hood

The annual Seward Arts Festival is scheduled for December 1st and 2nd from 12 – 5PM with a kickoff party on Friday November 30th from 6:30 – 9:30 PM at the Playwritght’s Center.  Register online at

Homelessness Talk on October 3rd at  Matthews Center
Do you have a moral dilemma each time you come to a street corner and see someone with a sign asking for money?  Do you struggle with whether to make eye contact or just drive on without looking?  If so, come to Matthews Center on October 3rd and learn about homelessness and panhandling from the experts at St. Stephen’s Street Outreach.

  On Wednesday October 3rd Monica Nilsson, Director of Community Engagement at St Stephen’s Human Services will come to Matthews Center at 7PM will come to talk to Seward Residents about homelessness in our neighborhood and ways it affects and can be affected by the business community.

Spokes  Bike Walk Connect

  • Weekly Volunteer Evening:  Every Thursday 4PM – 8PM (come whenever you can).  Any skill level welcomed.  Help repair used bikes (and a great time to drop off a repairable bike you want to donate).
  • Adult Learn-to-Ride Classes  Start Septmeber 12 – on your bike or our bike.  Wednesdays, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM at Matthews Park –29th Ave. and 24th Street.  Call or email SPOKES to reserve your space-Space is limited.
  • Open Shop–Every Saturday from 1 – 5PM.  Use our tools to fix your bike.  A bike mechanic will be available to help when needed.
  • Women Only open Shop–the 4th Monday of every month from 7 – 9PM.
  • Community Rides–Every Saturday morning from 10:30 – 12 Noon.  Relaxed pace, 4 – 6 miles to different locations in the area.  A great family activity.  Bring your own bike or borrow one from SPOLES (only adult bikes are available)
  • Used Bike DriveDonate your unused, repairable bikes to SPOKES–Are you trying to get your car back in your garage? Do you have a bike gathering dust in the basement or storeroom?  Get that un-used bike into the hands of someone who will use it! SPOKES relies on a steady supply of repairable used bikes. Used bicycles will be needed in many of SPOKES’ community programs – including Junior Mechanics classes, Earn-a-Bike and the Bike Lending Library. SPOKES will also fix up bikes to sell at reasonable prices to community members.
SPOKES Wish List   A few things we could really use at Spokes.

  •  Repairable used bikes (Just drop them on Thursday evenings or Saturday afternoons).
  •  Metal utility shelving (does not have to be pretty).
  • Two drawer lateral file cabinets.  A working dorm sized refrigerator.
  •  Folding chairs (Welna II donated eight great new folding chairs–THANK YOU Jim, We could use about 20 more.)
  • Battery powered wall clock (fairly large)

Board Openings
Seward Neighborhood Group has 2 openings on our board of directors.  If you are interestested in joining the board email a short biography (1 paragraph) to or call 612338-6205 ext 119.  The Board meets the 4th Wednesday of every month and the next meeting is September 26th at 7PM at Matthews Center.

SNG Home Improvement Loan Programs are now available to Townhouse, Condominium and rental property owners.
The SNG Revolving Loan Program can now be used for improvements to 1-4 unit owner occupied and nonowner occupied rental properties.  The loans are also available to townhouses and condominiums. The Revolving Loan Program provides loans up to $12,000 for exterior, energy, mechanical, electrical and code improvements at 3.75%.

  The SNG Interest Subsidy Grant Program reduces the interest rate on Community Fix-up Fund loans from 5.75% to 3.75% on loans up to $20,000 for up to 15 years. The Community Fix-up Fund is available to owner occupied 1-4 unit buildings and townhouse and condominium owners.  The loans can be used for most types of home improvement projects including interior remodeling and additions. 

  The Emergency Deferred Loan Program provides deferred loans to owner-occupants of properties in the Seward neighborhood who face emergency home repairs and are unable to obtain funds to repair the problem. Loans will be made to cover the cost of correcting the problem up to a maximum of $5,000. For homeowners unable to make monthly payments, the loans will be repaid when the house is sold.  All of the loan programs have an annual household income limit of $96,500 for the owner of the property.

Neighborhood Crime alerts available

If you are interested in getting up-to-date emails on Neighborhood crime issues sign up at There has been an small increase in daytime break-ins.  Make sure your doors are locked both day and night. Don’t forget about locking your garage door!   Make sure to report any suspicious activity to 911!!

Vine Arts Center-New show started in August

Hot of the easels of the painters at the Ivy Building for the Arts comes Fresh Paint @ Vine Arts Center.
This latest exhibit demonstrates the magnitude and quality of painting happening within the Ivy Building community.
The great breadth of approaches to painting is matched by the depth of expression, and love of painting that these artists all share.
